What I Learned During My Summer Internship at Marketing Maven

What I Learned During My Summer Internship at Marketing Maven

This summer, I had the opportunity to work as an intern at Marketing Maven. I chose to work at Marketing Maven because I wanted a job where I was able to express my creativity and learn new skills while also putting myself on a professional career path. Going into my internship, I expected to not fit in because I was still in high school and had a different skillset than my teammates. But, everyone was extremely welcoming and helpful. Throughout my internship, I gained valuable experience in video production, professional communication and teamwork, and photography. Working alongside a talented team of professionals helped me develop new skills and gave me a better understanding of what it is like to work in the marketing industry.

My Core Responsibilities

One of my primary responsibilities during the internship was creating videos for clients. I worked on a variety of projects, including vertical social media videos, horizontal videos, and hero videos for websites. I’m lucky to have worked on so many different types of videos because it allowed me to build experience in multiple areas. I worked on a decent variety of videos that tell stories, show products, and have humor. Because every client had a different audience, brand personality, and set of expectations, I learned how to tailor my videos and content to accurately reflect their unique identity. Through these projects, I learned how different types of videos serve different purposes and audiences.

What I Learned

Since Marketing Maven operates remotely, I gained valuable experience working in a virtual professional environment. Before this internship, I had never used Zoom in a workplace setting, but throughout the summer I participated in weekly staff meetings and department meetings with team members. These meetings helped me stay informed about projects, collaborate with others, and observe how professionals communicate and solve problems together. Working with a variety of clients also taught me how to adapt my content to match different brand identities, expectations, and audiences. Through this experience, I improved my video editing skills and learned how to create content that aligns with a company's message and goals. Most importantly, I gained a better understanding of the importance of storytelling, communication, and teamwork in the marketing industry.

My Favorite Projects and Experiences

Another valuable part of my internship was the opportunity to build relationships with the staff. Even though we worked remotely, everyone was welcoming, supportive, and willing to share their knowledge. By interacting with team members from different departments, I learned about the many roles that contribute to a successful marketing team. These connections made the experience more enjoyable and helped me grow professionally. Along with that, one of the aspects of my internship that I enjoyed most was the opportunity to use my creativity on a variety of projects. My favorite video that I created was a reel showcasing Marketing Maven’s relocation from Great Bend, Kansas, to Wichita, Kansas. I had the freedom to make the video engaging by incorporating creative transitions, sound effects, and upbeat music that helped tell the story in a fun way. Another project I particularly enjoyed was editing my professional headshot in Photoshop. Through this process, I was able to apply design and photo-editing techniques. These projects allowed me to express my creativity while developing valuable skills in video production and graphic design.

Reflection

Overall, my summer internship at Marketing Maven was an incredibly rewarding experience. I strengthened my technical skills, learned how to communicate in a professional work environment, and gained valuable experience in the marketing industry. Most importantly, I developed confidence in my abilities and gained insight into potential career paths. Moving forward, I would like to continue building my confidence in professional settings by becoming more comfortable sharing ideas, collaborating with others, and taking on new challenges. This experience taught me the importance of creativity, adaptability, communication, and teamwork, all of which I will carry with me in future academic and professional opportunities. I am grateful for everything I learned during my time at Marketing Maven and look forward to applying these lessons in the future.
