'More opportunity': Marketing Maven relocates from Great Bend to Wichita to pursue larger clients

Kansas native Rachel Rains has relocated her Marketing Maven marketing and public relations firm from Great Bend to Wichita in a move to grow her portfolio of mid- and large-sized companies.
Rains spent nearly 10 years doing communications work in the nonprofit and healthcare sectors before starting Marketing Maven in 2016. The firm operated out of a Great Bend office and relocated to Groover Labs, a Wichita co-working and innovation hub, in May.
Nearly 10 years later, she's built up her team and roster of clients. Her team of 10 is fully remote, but eight are located in Wichita. "I wanted to be closer to my team and also an airport, because we work with clients all over the country," Rains told the Business Journal. "Some of my largest clients are in other states, even as far as New York. It was prohibitive not living close to an airport where I could travel when I need to."
Marketing Maven does brand management, graphic design, video production and photography work, among other services. Its clients are in the agriculture, manufacturing, automotive, real estate and healthcare industries. "From a revenue perspective, most of what we do is actually being a marketing department for companies that either don't have one or maybe have some staff that need additional support," Rains said. "Most of our clients we work with year-round."
Rains said doing business in Great Bend was successful due to the tightknit business community and word-of-mouth, but she likes that Wichita has larger companies. "It's easy to get referrals in western Kansas, because when you do well for one person, they're very generous wanting to spread the word," Rains said. "We thrive the best working with clients who have 50 to 200 employees, so with the size of a company that can do that in western Kansas, you've narrowed the list quite a bit. Wichita presents a lot more opportunity and lot more resources."

Rains said Wichita also has a large creative market and hopes to network with firms and agencies. Being based at Groover Labs, she plans to network at 1 Million Cups and other events.
